Reubenʼs best friend from childhood, Dora, who is also 17, is secretly in love with him and looks for ways to sabotage his relationship with Emily. She will stop at nothing to get him for herself. The Pastor is desperate to get his daughter married. With his failing health, he is eager to introduce a new Pastor to take his place. The new pastor turns out to be Doraʼs cousin. But too much is known about Emily (who is with child) in this small town, and his Aunt steps in to stop the marriage. Ultimately, not one of the three; Emily, Reuben or Dora want to live in Jericho any longer, and they leave together.
